Sparta Township is considered the Gateway to Sussex County. Sparta is known for its Top rated schools and recreation. It has been voted numerous times as The Best Place to Live by NJ Magazine. Sparta has 11 private lake communities; the largest of which is Lake Mohawk. The Lake Mohawk Boardwalk and Plaza are listed on the State and National Historic Registers. Most noted for its mining industry. Thomas Edison‘s connection to Sparta is he invested 3.5 million in the Edison Ore milling company in 1889 operating on Sparta mountain Edison’s operation employed 500 people. The Sterling Mine Museum is open for public tours it had both iron and zinc operations. Sparta has easy access to Rts 15 & 80, great for commuting. Commuters can also use the Lakeland bus lines to Port Authority or pick up the train in nearby Mt Olive.
