The Name Wanaque is thought to have been derived from the Lenni Lenape Native American word meaning “land of sassafras”. Wanaque Borough, with its small-town feel has emerged as a very popular location to live since Rt. 287 opened in 1993, with access to major highways, making Wanaque a commuter's delight! Home to the Wanaque Reservoir, a very picturesque dam located in the north end of town. Wanaque has two K-8 public schools and Lakeland Regional High School, serving both Wanaque and Ringwood Borough.
